![]() ![]() I have extensive experience with computers-have programmed in multiple languages, managed software development projects (proprietary business software, not commercial software), and about 25 years ago managed a Unix box for a research group as a grad student, so I am more nimble than the average user, although less than a pro-Linux geek. My system was still bootable, but one needed to have a CD in the drive or do something else that I can't remember to get Windows to boot. Several years ago, the dual booting installation software corrupted my boot sector and all attempts at repair failed. Three weeks ago after setting up Ubuntu on a memory stick and dual booting a laptop from the stick, I found that Windows had to repair the operating system of the laptop. My experience with setting up a dual boot Linux-Windows system is that it is a time sync. I’m sure there is a way, but with a decent piece of software you can figure this out in 30 seconds.ĭual boot is a bad solution, unless you need dual boot for some other purpose or enjoy experimenting. No easily intuitive way of looking at the Exif information for a photo. You instead go to the configuration menu and create a new collection. –You cannot just add a new album to the, except as a subfolder to the existing album. The RAW editing pipeline does not support 16-bit images. A RAW photo is a JPEG that has been created from the RAW photograph. Shotwell currently only supports RAW formats. I had to search on the internet to find how to get the menu. Shotwell supports JPEG and PNG as well as TIFF, BMPs, GIFs, WebP, GIF, WebP, and RAW photo files. Right clicking on the toolbar gives you no help. I use Linux most of the time, and tried running digiKam a while back in Windows (probably a couple of years back), and the installation was on the buggy side due to all of the KDE libraries required to make it work and it seemed a bit sluggish compared to how it works in Linux. –When I started up the program the standard menu did not appear. After some installs and re-installs, I believe what may have happened is that it was trying to catalog my images, but was not showing me any indication of that.Ħ) The interface is confusing and intuitive. Even if you have an account set up on the bug reporting service, when you go through the steps it ends with an error message that you are not logged into their server.ģ) The program crashes when you select import images.Ĥ) Upon first usage the program appeared to freeze on me. Ģ) The bug reporting facility does not even work. For example trying to search for all jpegs that I rated with 4 stars freezes. Some of my findings:ġ) Mysterious crashes and features that don’t work. I tried it on Windows 7, 64 bit system with 24GB memory. Are reviewers just looking at feature lists without trying it? It is loaded with features and missing quality. ![]() Other great apps like Picasa are FastStone Image Viewer, nomacs, ImageGlass and Adobe Lightroom. The best Picasa alternative is digiKam, which is both free and Open Source. I cannot believe that people “reviewing” this piece of software have actually used it. There are more than 50 alternatives to Picasa for a variety of platforms, including Windows, Mac, Web-based, iPhone and Android apps. My experience with Digikam has been very negative. The impatient reader may directly browse their code on GitHub, starting from the dedicated site.I would recommend against Digikam for Windows and against using in a dual boot system. In following posts, I will describe some of these components and will present some ideas and maybe results on the technology’s potential. ![]() The students (François Monniot and Alexis Mousset) have worked very well, and we have a few apps in the result, that allow us to assemble a POC in order to complete our evaluation. a non functional need: investigate the potential benefits of docker, compared to Vagrant.a functional need: being able to monitor what happens inside the VMs run on the participant’s side, so that MOOC labs aren’t performed in a black box Une application moderne, bourrée de fonctionnalités, qui est Open Source et entièrement gratuite. The project was addressing several needs : ![]() In order to move on, I’ve applied a clever trick by proposing a project to students of ours (3rd year engineering school end-of-classes project of the ASR major). After having used Vagrant to create Virtual Machines (VMs) ready made for MOOC participants, I’ve been investigating the use of docker for a similar need. ![]()
